Camping in Limekiln State Park: Eight Vital Facts

Our Limekiln State Park Camping Guide has all the information you need to get ready for your planned visit to the breathtaking Limekiln State Park in California. We’ll give you a quick rundown on the campgrounds, how to make reservations, and what you can do and see at this fantastic state park!

Camping at Limekiln State Park: What to Expect

Limekiln State Park is home to 700+ acres of redwood woods along the Big Sur coast, making it one of California’s most beautiful places to visit. Its three well-traveled hiking trails are not too difficult, and the views of the coastline are unmatched. The finest of both the beach and the forest are available to all campers at this park, which is renowned for being a terrific place to genuinely take in the beauty of nature in a peaceful setting.

Limekiln State Park Camping: The Complete Guide

This lovely state park is open from 8 am to dusk and has RV access, rustic camping, and family camping. Camping check-in begins at 2:00 PM local time.

Best Camping Locations in Limekiln State Park

The 29 standard, unpowered campsites at Limekiln State Park are split into two areas: The Redwood Campsites, which are situated along Limekiln Creek on the campground’s inland side, and The Ocean Campsites, which are situated on the coastal side of the campground across a bridge over Limekiln Creek. Each of these sites can hold up to eight people. Each campsite features a picnic table and a fire ring for campfires (firewood can be bought from the campground host for a modest cost). Additionally, there are flush toilets, paid showers, and water available as amenities. Dogs are allowed in the campground on leashes no longer than 6 feet, however they are not allowed on any of the trails.

Camping expenses total $35 per night. The Ocean Campsites have speedier access to the beach and even some ocean views, with Sites 1 and 2 being built above the others providing the best viewing at the Pacific Ocean. The Redwood Campsites are situated near the start of the paths up Limekiln Canyon, offering quicker access to inland trekking. Sites 17–21 and 26–29 in the Ocean Campsites may also fit two automobiles and RVs up to 24 feet long. All other locations are designed for tent camping and are single-vehicle only.

Activities in Limekiln State Park for Camping

The natural beauty of this park is one of its main draws! During your camping trip in Limekiln State Park, you should be prepared to do a lot of hiking and sightseeing. After you’ve taken in all the inland beauty of the park, you’ll want to head to the beach and coastline, where you can go swimming, shore-fishing, sunbathing, and sightseeing—soaking in all the beauty that the park and nearby Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary have to offer! The trails lead to mesmerizing waterfalls and through towering redwood cathedrals, passing by the now-dormant iron-and-stone lime kilns for which the park is named.

Wildlife

Skunks, bobcats, foxes, raccoons, ringtails, falcons, condors, and mountain lions are just a few of the magnificent and diverse species that call this area home. Sea otters, grey whales, and other amazing marine life can be seen along the shoreline, as well as seabirds like gulls and pelicans and shorebirds like sandpipers and willets.

The optimum time to see these amazing species varies greatly, but if you hike through the redwoods or spend enough time on the beach throughout the day, you’re sure to run into some of Limekiln State Park’s many lovely wildlife residents!

Geomorphology and Vegetation

This section of the wild Big Sur coastline is well-known for its natural beauty and is especially well-known for its redwood woods. As you hike along Limekiln Creek and out to the shore, you’ll see soaring cliffs, thundering surf, and stunning vaults of tall redwoods. The natural splendor of this park’s ecosystem and surroundings is probably going to rank among your most unforgettable camping experiences.

Make certain to bring

When you’re considering camping at Limekiln State Park, be sure to be prepared due to the frequently fluctuating weather in this region of California! Examine any camping supplies, first aid kits, food storage containers, etc. for rips, cracks, or other potentially dangerous flaws. Due to the abundance of poison oak in the park, it is advised to have an anti-itch solution in your first aid kit. Additionally, if you plan to hike and sunbathe, please remember to carry layers of clothing so you can adapt to the weather.

Fishermen visiting the park should make sure they have the necessary equipment, tackle, and a valid California fishing licence. For hikers, please make sure you have the proper footwear, daywear, insect repellant (ticks are abundant in the redwoods, so consider a cap and tall socks or long pants in addition to your insect repellant of choice), and a map and compass (cell service and GPS can be spotty to nonexistent within the park).

Camping Fees at Limekiln State Park

Please be aware of the following fees as you get ready for your camping trip in Limekiln State Park:

  • A $10 per vehicle day-use fee
  • A $35 per night camping cost
  • Charge for firewood (Note: Cash-only payments accepted for firewood)
